Once Upon a Zoom
& Alice in Cyberland

Jackson County 4th through 9th graders,

As you may or may not know, the Center Stage Jackson Youth Theater program has been shut down for the last ten months due to concerns around Covid-19. All live productions have been postponed until it is safe to resume group activities. This has been a bummer for those of us with theater in their blood who are itching to do SOMETHING.

Last month, CSJ Youth Theater did a virtual table read of GOOSE-NAPPED. Based on the positive feedback received, we are going to do another virtual activity but this will be just a little closer to an actual performance.

The CSJ Youth Theater is going to do a virtual performance of two scripts called “Once Upon a Zoom” and “Alice in Cyberland.”

Although this is technically a performance, you will not be required to memorize lines (although you are welcome to do so). All actors will perform from their home via a Zoom call.

The sign up form for this event is now closed. If you applied, director (Melissa McElhone) and the Stage Manager (Wendy Lake) will create a cast list and Wendy will send you an electronic script for you to read through and familiarize yourself with your part (if cast). There will be a couple of rehearsals for each script and a virtual performance on Friday June 4 at 7:00 pm, which you can invite your friends and family to watch. There will be no charge to watch on Zoom.

Hope to see you online soon!

Synopsis (About the Plays)

Once Upon a Zoom
Ava wants friends, which is why she agreed to work with some classmates on a project about the modern relevance of fairy tales. But as Ava finds herself once again waiting for her partners to show up online and feeling like she has to do all the work herself, she’s suddenly “Zoom-bombed”… by fairy tale characters! Ava soon gleans a lesson from timorous Cinderella, brash Maid Marion, besotted Robin Hood, and evil Evil Queen: her story is her own to write. Newly determined not to be taken advantage of, Ava is ready to tell the others that their partnership is over. Instead, she comes to find that her classmates have also learned a lesson about just how relevant fairy tales can be.

Alice in Cyberland
Procrastinating on her homework, Alice falls asleep as she plays solitaire on her computer and is awoken by a white rabbit. As the fuzzy bunny rushes off, the Cheshire Cat appears, informing Alice with a smile that she is now in Cyberland. Alice learns that she must find the dreaded Queen of Hearts in order to learn the password that will allow her to regain control of her computer. But everyone she meets along the way — a caterpillar, the Mad Hatter, the March Hare, and a duchess — tells her that she doesn’t want to meet the Queen of Hearts! When Alice finally encounters the Queen, her majesty accuses the visitor of stealing her password and puts her on trial in a most ridiculous manner.
